Having two kids in college and two more going next year I could not sit by without giving my two cents about Rutgers University decision to pay Nicole “Snooki” Poluzzu $32,000 to speak on campus last week.
Hey it’s not Snooki’s fault, let’s look to the administration and the adults who authorized the use of funds and the platform that Snooki was given. I don’t think it’s such a bad idea to have all different types of media figures speak at Rutgers or other colleges throughout the United States. It’s entertaining and can be educational to expose our college kids to pop culture, and it is the students, our teens who have made the Jersey Shore Cast the reality celebrities that they are.
We can’t blame the cast of Jersey Shore for wanting to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way. They play up their roles, create entertaining, scratch your head, ridiculous, and obnoxious television. Don’t we know that the advertisers are in fact also profiting from the casts antics. MTV has seen its biggest surge in audiences and revenue over the last few years, so thank the cast of the Jersey Shore, and many pregnant teens who are filling the pockets of executives and advertisers.
Congrats to Snooki for being able to have a brilliant and creative management team that is able to close a very lucrative agreement and speaking engagement. I don’t think it was Snooki that carved out the details, negotiated the fee, ran the publicity, or made any of the arrangements for her Rutgers talk.
Why blame Snooki, in fact I think that it was probably a lot of fun, entertaining and exciting for the students to have her speak, I have to think maybe all Snooki may have requested in exchange for her appearance was a few spray tanning sessions, a salon day, and perhaps some liquid libations as a fee.
I think we the parents of teens and college students need to start taking a closer look at where the funds are being distributed. Next year I will have three children in college. The tuitions I’m paying far exceed what was reported that the Rutgers college students pay.
So the fact that Rutgers University would spend $32,000 to bring a pop icon to talk to our kids about how to get their party on upsets me because we sent our kids to COLLEGE don’t they know how to get their party on? Some of Snooki’s words of wisdom.. “Study hard, but party harder” and “When you’re tan, you feel better about yourself.”
As a parent I would not have been as upset with the school or my college kids attending Snooki’s talk, as long as I knew that speakers such as, Chris Brogan, Gary Vaynerchuk, Biz Stone, Liz Strauss, and many other new media, social media speakers were allowed such platforms.
When an author such as Toni Morrison who can actually educate our children about the ups and downs of life, getting a book contract, negotiating with agents writing a bestseller, and dealing with hard times, is getting paid less than a Snooki, what does that say about us as a society?

I was so honored to have been invited to take part of the 2011 International Home + Housewares Show. The show runs from Sunday – Tuesday March 6-8 at McCormick Place in Chicago. This year I’m attending as a guest and a member of the media.
For the next few days, I will be spending time on the showroom floor talking to retailers about how they can start using some of the tools of social media to build their business, but I will also be looking for some fun new products to review…I have a list and I’m ready to hit the floor..but I wanted to take a look back at one of my first product reviews..The Ped Egg
